Today's verse is from Deuteronomy 32:3–4:
“For I proclaim the name of the LORD: Ascribe greatness to our God. He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.”
Our God Is the Rock
As Moses approaches the end of his life, he delivers a song to Israel that serves as both a testimony of God's faithfulness and a warning against the people's future unfaithfulness. In Deuteronomy 31–32, God instructs Moses to teach this song to Israel so that it will stand as a witness against them when they turn away from Him.
Moses begins by calling heaven and earth to listen and proclaiming the greatness of God. His words direct Israel's attention away from themselves and toward the unchanging character of the One they serve.
He declares, “He is the Rock.”
A rock represents strength, stability, and something that cannot easily be moved. Unlike the shifting circumstances of life or the changing faithfulness of people, God remains constant. He is dependable, trustworthy, and unchanging. His character does not fluctuate with our circumstances, and His promises do not depend on human reliability.
Moses then describes the perfection of God's character:
His work is perfect. Everything God does is without fault. His wisdom and purposes are never mistaken, even when we cannot understand what He is doing.
All His ways are justice. God never acts unfairly or makes an unrighteous judgment. His decisions are always consistent with His perfect holiness.
A God of truth and without injustice. There is no dishonesty, deception, or wrongdoing in Him. He is completely trustworthy.
Righteous and upright is He. Everything about God's character is morally perfect. He is the standard of righteousness, not someone who must measure Himself against ours.
What a powerful description of the God we serve!
These verses remind us that God's greatness is not simply demonstrated by His power, but also by the perfection of His character.
We can trust Him because He is perfectly good, perfectly just, and perfectly faithful. His actions are never separated from His righteousness, and His purposes are never corrupted by sin.
Scripture reinforces this truth throughout the Bible:
Psalm 18:2 describes the LORD as our rock, fortress, and deliverer. Numbers 23:19 reminds us that God is not a man who should lie or change His mind like humanity. And James 1:17 tells us that with God there is no variation or shadow of turning.
Our confidence, therefore, should never rest in the stability of this world, our own understanding, or the faithfulness of other people. It should rest in God Himself.
The image of God as the Rock finds a beautiful connection in Jesus Christ.
In 1 Corinthians 10:4, Paul refers to the spiritual Rock that accompanied Israel in the wilderness and declares, “that Rock was Christ.”
Jesus is not merely someone who teaches us about God's faithfulness; He is the eternal Son of God through whom God's faithfulness and righteousness are made known.
He lived a perfectly righteous life, fulfilled the Father's will, and willingly gave Himself on the cross to save sinners. Through His death and resurrection, those who place their faith in Him are reconciled to God and given a secure foundation that cannot be shaken.
As 1 Peter 2:6 describes Christ, He is the chief cornerstone, chosen and precious. Everyone who believes in Him will not be put to shame.
The world offers many things that promise security, but only Christ provides a foundation that endures forever.
If God is the Rock, then our lives should be built upon Him.
We should trust His character even when we cannot understand His circumstances. We should submit to His wisdom when our own reasoning leads us in another direction. And we should pursue righteousness because the God we belong to is righteous.
It is also a reminder that we should never judge God's goodness by whether life is going according to our plans. His ways are perfect even when they are difficult, and His faithfulness does not disappear when we experience hardship.
Here's a personal question to consider for today:
Where am I placing my confidence? Am I building my life on circumstances, personal understanding, achievements, or the approval of others—or am I firmly resting my confidence in the unchanging character of God?
Remember, everything around us may change, but God never does. His work is perfect, His ways are just, and His Word is true. We can build our lives on Him with complete confidence.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being our Rock and our firm foundation. Forgive us for the times we place our confidence in the things of this world rather than in You. Help us trust Your perfect wisdom, remain steadfast in Your truth, and walk in righteousness. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ, through whom we have forgiveness and eternal hope. May our lives reflect Your greatness and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
