Today's verse is from Proverbs 14:12:
“There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” — Proverbs 14:12 (NKJV)
Have you ever made a decision because it felt right, only to discover later that it led you in the wrong direction? We often trust our instincts, follow popular opinions, or choose what seems most beneficial. But Proverbs 14:12 reminds us that what appears right to us is not necessarily right in God's sight.
Proverbs is part of the Bible's wisdom literature, teaching God's people how to live wisely in His world. The surrounding verses contrast wisdom and foolishness, righteousness and wickedness, and the different outcomes they produce. This proverb warns us that human judgment alone is not a reliable measure of truth. A path may appear sensible or desirable while leading to devastating consequences. The word “death” points to the serious end of a way of life that departs from God's wisdom—not merely an unexpected disappointment.
This warning does not mean that every decision that feels difficult is right, or that our judgment is always wrong. It means we must test our thinking against God's revealed truth. As Proverbs 3:5–6 teaches, we are not to lean entirely on our own understanding but to trust the Lord and acknowledge Him in our ways.
What does this reveal about God? He possesses wisdom we do not have, sees outcomes we cannot see, and provides truth to guide us. His Word helps us discern between what merely looks good and what is genuinely good. We need humility to accept that our perspective is limited and that God's wisdom is more trustworthy than our own.
This truth also points us to our deepest need: Jesus Christ. He declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Our greatest problem is not simply that we sometimes make poor decisions; sin separates us from God, and we cannot rescue ourselves through our own wisdom or goodness. Jesus came to save sinners through His death and resurrection, opening the way to reconciliation with God. We are called not only to trust Him for salvation but also to follow Him as Lord, allowing His Word to shape how we think and live.
So, before choosing a path, consider whether it agrees with Scripture rather than simply asking whether it feels right, is convenient, or wins others' approval. Pray for wisdom, examine your motives, and seek godly counsel when needed. If God's Word exposes a wrong direction, respond with repentance and trust rather than trying to justify your choice.
Here's a personal question to consider for today: Is there an area of my life where I am trusting my own judgment more than God's Word?
Remember, the path that looks easiest or most appealing is not always the path that leads to life. We can walk with confidence when we trust Christ, submit to God's truth, and depend on His grace to correct and guide us.
Prayer: Father, thank You for giving us Your Word to guide us in truth. Forgive us for the times we trust our own understanding above Your wisdom. Help us recognize where our thinking needs to change, and give us humble hearts that are willing to obey You. Thank You for Jesus Christ, the way, the truth, and the life. Teach us to trust Him and follow Him faithfully each day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
