Today's verse is from Proverbs 9:8.
“Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.” Proverbs 9:8 (NKJV)
.In today's verse, Solomon contrasts two very different responses to correction. The scoffer, blinded by pride, resents anyone who challenges him. Rather than considering whether the correction is true, he becomes offended by the person offering it. The wise person, however, welcomes correction because he recognizes that even uncomfortable truth can expose blind spots, protect him from sin, and lead him toward greater wisdom.
Proverbs 27:6 reminds us, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend.” Sometimes the person who loves us most is the one willing to tell us what we don't want to hear. And Proverbs 9:9 teaches that a wise man becomes even wiser through instruction. Wisdom is not found in believing we have arrived, but in humbly recognizing how much we still need to learn.
This begins with our relationship with God. Proverbs 9:10 declares that “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” When we humbly submit ourselves to His Word, we recognize that His correction is not intended to harm us but to make us more like Christ. Hebrews 12:6 reminds us that the Lord disciplines those He loves.
Heart check: When someone corrects me, do I immediately become defensive, justify my actions, or question their motives? Am I more concerned with protecting my pride than discovering the truth? Could I be rejecting the very correction God intends to use for my spiritual growth? Even when correction is delivered imperfectly, a humble heart is willing to examine it honestly against God's Word.
Remember, the danger of pride is that it can make us resistant to the very truth we need most. A wise heart doesn't have to be right all the time. It wants to be made right before God. A fool sees correction as a personal attack. A wise person sees it as an opportunity to grow. The question isn't whether we need correction, but whether our hearts are humble enough to receive it.
How we respond to correction reveals the condition of our hearts
Prayer
Heavenly Father, guard my heart against pride and defensiveness. Give me the humility to receive correction, even when it is uncomfortable. Help me love truth more than my own opinions and recognize Your loving hand in the instruction I receive. Keep my heart teachable and continue conforming me to the image of Jesus Christ. Amen.
