Today's verse is from 2 Corinthians 5:8:
“We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” — 2 Corinthians 5:8 (NKJV)
Our Eternal Hope
For those who belong to Christ, death is not the end of the story. Although the thought of leaving this world can be difficult, God's Word gives believers a remarkable assurance: to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
The apostle Paul wrote these words with confidence, not because life on earth was without hardship, but because his hope was firmly rooted in Jesus Christ. He understood that our earthly lives are temporary, while the life God promises His people extends beyond the grave.
This hope does not mean we should take our earthly lives lightly. Rather, it reminds us to live with eternity in view. Our time here matters. The choices we make, the love we show, the truth we speak, and the way we serve Christ all have significance beyond what we can presently see.
When we understand that our true hope is in Christ, our perspective begins to change. The temporary struggles of this world no longer have the final word. Fear can give way to confidence, and uncertainty can be met with the assurance that our future rests in the hands of our faithful Savior.
But this promise is not simply about looking forward to heaven. It is also about knowing Christ today. The One who will welcome believers into His presence is the same One who calls us to walk with Him now. We are not our own; we belong to Him.
So let us not live as though this world is all there is. Let us live each day faithfully, with our identity grounded in Christ and our hearts set on the eternal home He has promised. We have one life to live here, and it is an opportunity to honor the Lord who gave Himself for us.
Here’s a personal question for us to consider today.
If you truly believe that your future is secure in Christ, how should that change the way you live today? Are you allowing temporary worries, worldly pursuits, or the fear of death to overshadow the eternal hope God has given you?
Our time on earth is limited, but for those who are in Christ, eternity with the Lord awaits. May that truth shape our priorities, strengthen our faith, and encourage us to live boldly for Him.
Remember
Our hope is not merely in a place called heaven, but in the Person of Jesus Christ, who has secured eternal life for all who belong to Him. Live today with eternity in view, faithfully serving the One with whom you will one day dwell forever.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the eternal hope You have given us through Jesus Christ. Help us to look beyond the temporary things of this world and live with our eyes fixed on eternity. Strengthen our faith when we face uncertainty, comfort us when we grieve, and remind us that our lives belong to You. Teach us to use the time You have given us to honor You, love others, and faithfully proclaim the truth of the gospel. May we live each day with confidence in Your promises and anticipation of being in Your presence. In Jesus' name, Amen.
