Today’s verse is from Psalm 27:4:
“One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.” — Psalm 27:4 (NKJV)
David had real reasons to ask God for protection. Psalm 27 speaks of enemies, danger, and fear. Yet amid those concerns, one desire rose above the others: to be near the Lord.
David’s longing to dwell in God’s house expressed more than a desire to visit a place of worship. He wanted ongoing fellowship with God—to delight in His beauty, know His character, and seek His direction. His words joined desire with pursuit: “That will I seek.”
We see a similar priority when Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, listening to His teaching while Martha became distracted with serving. Jesus lovingly addressed Martha’s anxious preoccupation and commended Mary’s choice (Luke 10:38–42). Serving Him matters, but our service should flow from listening to Him and enjoying fellowship with Him.
Through Jesus Christ, believers have access to the Father. His sacrifice has opened the way for us to draw near with confidence (Hebrews 10:19–22). The fellowship David treasured is something we can enjoy as we approach God through His Son.
So, what does this mean for us today? Our responsibilities still need attention, and our troubles may still require prayer. But knowing the Lord deserves first place in the middle of them. We can bring Him our needs while also seeking Him simply because He is worthy of our love.
Here’s a personal question to consider for today: What does the way I spend my time reveal about what I most desire?
Before reaching for your phone or moving into your next task, take a few quiet moments to read God’s Word and respond in prayer. Ask Him to make knowing Him your deepest desire—and let that desire shape the rest of your day.
Prayer: Father, You know how easily my attention becomes divided. Give me a greater desire to know You, delight in Your goodness, and follow Your direction. Thank You for opening the way into Your presence through Jesus. Help me listen before I hurry and seek You in every responsibility You have given me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
