Today's verse is from Colossians 1:15:
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” — Colossians 1:15 (NKJV)
Have you ever wondered what God is really like? His character, His heart, His holiness, and His love? The wonderful truth of today's verse is that we don't have to wonder. God has perfectly revealed Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Writing to the believers in Colossae, Paul was confronting teachings that diminished the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. He reminds them that Jesus is not merely a great teacher, prophet, or messenger from God. He is the very image of the invisible God. As Jesus told Philip, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Everything we need to know about God's character is perfectly revealed in Christ.
Paul also calls Jesus the “firstborn over all creation.” This does not mean Jesus was created first. Rather, firstborn speaks of His supreme authority and preeminence over everything. Paul confirms this in the very next verse, declaring that all things were created through Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16). Jesus is not part of creation. He is the eternal Creator, sovereign over all things!
But there is another beautiful truth here. Genesis 1:27 tells us that humanity was created in God's image. Although sin has marred that image, God's purpose in salvation is to conform believers to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). Through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, we are being made increasingly like Christ.
Consider what that means for us today. If Jesus perfectly reveals the Father, and we are being transformed into His likeness, shouldn't others begin to see something of Christ in us? His compassion in our relationships, His humility in our service, His patience in our difficulties, and His truth in our words?
Jesus is not simply someone who tells us about God. He is God revealed to us. He is our Creator, our Redeemer, and the perfect example of the life we are called to live.
May our greatest desire today be not merely to know more about Christ, but to become more like Him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself so perfectly through Jesus Christ. Help me to know Him more deeply through Your Word and to recognize His authority over every area of my life. Continue transforming my heart through Your Holy Spirit so that my words, attitudes, and actions increasingly reflect His character. May others see less of me and more of Jesus. In His precious name, Amen.
