Today’s verse is from Matthew 5:16:
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works” — Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)
Have you ever wondered whether the way you live makes a difference to the people around you? Jesus reminds us that even ordinary acts of faithfulness can shine a light in someone’s life.
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told His disciples that they were the light of the world. He compared them to a city on a hill that cannot be hidden and to a lamp placed where it gives light to everyone in the house (Matthew 5:14–15). A lamp is meant to be seen—not to draw attention to itself, but to illuminate what is around it.
In the same way, Jesus calls His followers to live visibly for Him. The purpose is not to earn praise for ourselves. It is so that others may see the evidence of God’s work in our lives and glorify our Father in heaven.
Jesus is the true source of our light. He said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). As we follow Him, His character is reflected in the way we love, serve, forgive, and speak truth. These good works do not save us; they are the fruit of a life made new by His grace (Ephesians 2:8–10).
So, what might it look like to let your light shine today? It could be encouraging a coworker, showing patience when you feel frustrated, helping someone in need, or speaking about the hope you have in Christ. Often, God uses faithful moments we consider small to make His goodness visible to others.
Here’s a personal question to consider for today: When others see the way I live, do my words and actions point them toward Jesus?
We do not have to be the brightest person in the room. We simply need to remain close to Christ and let His light shine through us.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing me out of darkness and into the light of Your Son. Help me reflect Jesus in my words, my actions, and my attitude today. Give me opportunities to love and serve others, not for my own recognition, but so that You may be glorified. In Jesus’ name, amen.
